Calendar of Harptos

The Calendar of Harptos was the calendar used across most of Faerûn. It was created by the wizard Harptos of Kaalinth, [1] although most people associate the word "Harptos" with the calendar. It was split into twelve months, each lasting three tendays (or thirty days). [2] There were an additional five days that fell between months, bringing the total number of days in most years to 365. [3] The year starts with Hammer and ends with Nightal.

  Months and Festivals [ ]

  The names of the months and festivals used in Faerûn were as follows: [4]

  • Hammer ("Deepwinter") the first month
    • Midwinter between Hammer 30 and Alturiak 1
  • Alturiak ( pronounced : /ɔːlˈtɜːriæk/ awl-TUR-ee-æk[5] listen, "The Claw of Winter" or "The Claws of the Cold") the second month
  • Ches ("The Claw of Sunsets") the third month [note 1]
    • Spring Equinox on Ches 19
  • Tarsakh ( pronounced : /ˈtɑːrsæk/ TAR-sæk[5] listen, "The Claw of Storms") the fourth month [note 2]
    • Greengrass between Tarsakh 30 and Mirtul 1
  • Mirtul ( pronounced : /ˈmɜːrtəl/ MUR-tuhl[5] listen, "The Melting") the fifth month
  • Kythorn ( pronounced : /ˈkaɪθɔːrn/ KIGH-thorn[5] listen "The Time of Flowers") the sixth month
    • Summer Solstice on Kythorn 20
  • Flamerule ( pronounced : /ˈfleɪmruːl/ FLAYM-rool[5] listen, "Summertide") the seventh month
    • Midsummer between Flamerule 30 and Eleasis 1
    • Shieldmeet occurs the day after Midsummer, once every four years
  • Eleasis ( pronounced : /ɛˈlisɪs/ eh-LEE-sis[5] listen, "Highsun") the eighth month [note 3][note 4]
  • Eleint ( pronounced : /ɛˈleɪnt/ eh-LAYNT[5] listen, "The Fading") the ninth month

    • Highharvestide between Eleint 30 and Marpenoth 1
  • Marpenoth ("Leaffall") the tenth month

  Date Conventions [ ]

  The days making up a tenday did not have formal names. If precision was required, the number of the day and the number of the tenday were used, as in, "the fourth day of the first tenday of Flamerule" meaning "Flamerule 4". [6] Days of the month were typically written as the numerical date followed by the month name, for example, "15 Hammer", "Hammer 15" or "15th Hammer". [6] [7] Informally or poetically this could be spoken or written as "the 15th of Deepwinter". [3] [7]
