The Regulator No. 7 wall clock was listed in the Waterbury Clock Catalogs as early as 1891. This example is cased in walnut and measures 82 inches, or 6 feet 10 inches long. It is approximately 26 inches wide and 10.5 inches deep. It was originally offered in three choices of wood: oak, walnut, or cherry. This is a walnut example, and features burled walnut veneers in highlighted areas. The case is decorated with a variety of carvings. The model’s design incorporates carved fans, applied buttons, diamonds, and carved flutes. The front door and side panels are fitted with glass. Having glass on the sides of the case has an interesting effect on the interior. It lightens it up by allowing more light inside. As a result, the figured panel used in constructing the backboard is easy to see. The front of the case opens as a door. This provides access to the interior of the case and the mechanism. The dial is 12 inches in diameter and is framed in a brass bezel. The minute track is closed, and the hour numerals are in a large Roman format. Three hands are used to display the time. The hour and minute hands are in an open moon format. The long, thin hand is a sweep second hand. This rotates around the dial once a minute with the pendulum’s motion. The movement is Waterbury’s best quality. It features a dead-beat pin wheel escapement, sweep seconds, and retaining power. It is weight-powered and designed to run for eight days on a full wind. The mechanism is finely finished. The gearing is encased in an iron box, which protects it from dust. This box is mounted on top of an iron bracket to the backboard. The large pendulum bob, the brass-covered lead weight, and the dial bezel are brass. The pendulum features a gridiron rod and a large brass bob. The grid iron is designed to compensate for temperature changes. The two metals work against one another to stabilize the length. The brass-covered cylindrical lead weight descends behind the pendulum.
